Captains Phil & Karen Layton, along with daughter Anastasia and son Joshua, arrived at Hythe Corps in June 2003. Previously they had been stationed at Swanage Corps for 3 years, following Commissioning in 2000, and at Penge Corps during a summer placement in 1999. Prior to entering the Training College in 1998 Karen was a Civil Servant working for the Employment Service, and Phil was a Computer Presentations Designer. He also worked on the Salvation Army's Cold Weather Shelter at Blackfriars. Karen holds a Diploma of Higher Education in Salvation Army studies, while Phil holds a Bachelor of Arts (hons) degree in Religious Studies, and a Masters degree in Theology. Karen's capabilities have made it possible for Phil to hold an additional appointment as a New Testament Tutor at the William Booth College, London, and he is also a member of the United Kingdom Territory's Moral and Social Issues Council (MASIC). He has completed the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Management , Level 4, and NVQs in Information Technology, Levels 2&3. In addition, Phil is a corresponding member of The Salvation Army's International Doctrine Council, and in 2007 wrote a book called "The Sacraments and the Bible", which takes a fresh look at what Scripture has to say about the observance of baptism and the Eucharist.. |

Phil & Karen were married in 1995, and are very proud of their family who, through both sides of the family, are flying The Salvation Army colours into their 6th generation. When they have spare time Karen likes to read and climb mountains with Phil, who is also a keen fan of football. More recently they enjoy taking Ana and Joshua for walks by the sea, and swimming. |
